SQL Server management Studio 2016 will not install on Windows 7 SP1 machine
I have installed SQL Server Management Stuido ( June General Release) on several machines.
My old machine's hard drive crashed, and that machine had SSMS 2016 installed. After I got a new machine ( Company still on Windows 7 with SP1 ) and ran into problems with installing 2016 Management Studio. Note: SSMS 2014 is installed,
along with the fact that I have Administrator permissions.
1) First the installation will not even start if you do not have .net 4.5 installed. This was installed, which takes me to my next issue. This took forever to figure out, because no error messages or anything.
2) I am running Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 installed. I get the error message 'SETUP BLOCKED" when trying to install because "The current operating system is not supported. This application requires at lease Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 to run.
Below are screen shots from my install. The first is from the computer properties, the second is from the SSMS 2016 Install.
Any information would be great.
ODBC Driver 11 for SQL Server versus ODBC Driver 13 for SQL Server
I'm trying to figure out how to force my bcp command to use the ODBC Driver 13 instead of the ODBC Driver 11. I can see them both installed but when I run a bcp command to import data in UTF-8 (something I know won't work) I'm getting the following error:
[ODBC Driver 11 for SQL Server] This version of ODBC Driver for SQL Server does not support UTF-8 encoding
I've been able to do this on another of my servers that was a fresh install of SQL 2016 so it didn't have ODBC Driver 11, but when I upgraded another box from SQL Server 2012 to SQL Server 2016 it installed the ODBC Driver 13 but doesn't appear to be using it. Any thoughts on how to remove the ODBC Driver 11 or force bcp to use it instead?
MSDTC issues between web and database servers
We have an old web server running on a Microsoft Windows 2003 server running IIS 6 with classic asp and VB 6 com components which talks to a Microsoft Windows 2003 server with Microsoft 2000 SQL database installed.
We are currently looking to upgrade both servers to the latest versions and have started with the database server first. We've setup a Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter server and have installed Microsoft SQL server 2008 R2 on it with the intention of getting our sql setup working before upgrading again to SQL server 2012 or 2016.
We have spent some time testing our website with the new database and have had to fix a few minor sql syntax issues (mainly index hints) but on the whole things are working very well. However, we do have one issue that we can't seem to solve which occurs when a transaction is started on a web page by a call to one of our VB 6 components. The code in the component runs ok but when the call ends and IIS 6 attempts to commit the transaction we get the following error:
Error Number:-2147168246, Error Description: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Distributed transaction error
I have compared the MSDTC settings on the web server to our production environment web server and they look fine and have also compared the MSDTC settings on the 2008 database server with our production environment 2000 sql server and these look fine as well even though the settings screen does look a little different.
I have downloaded and run dtctester on the webserver and the following is the output I got:
Executed: c:\dtctester.exeDSN: xxx
User Name: xxx
Password: xxx

Creating Temp Table for Testing: #dtc22507

Obviously I know there is nothing wrong with the ODBC database DSN and the two servers can communicate as the COM components are able to query and retrieve data from the database as the rest of the website is working fine, it's just the transaction side of things that does not seem to work.
I've looked at various solutions found on the net but so far nothing is working. Any help in solving this issue would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Need details of SQL Server compliance - Different Edition of SQL Sever on VM servers
Hi,
Suppose if I have one physical host machine with ESX (not Hyper-v). On that physical machine there are 4 VM's
I have SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition-Per Core and SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition-Per Core. I want to install SQL Server 2012 on all 4 VM servers.
SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition on 3 VM servers and
SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition on one VM server
Will this become a compliance issue if different SQL Server 2012 Editions are installed on all VM server having only one physical host.

SSMS on windows Server 2012R2, Connect To Server dialog has a long lag of about 3 seconds per character typed
In a new installation of SQL Server 2008R2 Standard in a windows Server2012R2, we have mixed-mode authentication enabled. Using Windows authentication, we are able to authenticate using SQL Management Studio as expected. Using SQL authentication, SQL Management Studio will not let me authenticate. Two strange symptoms:
- Typing in the password field on the SQL Management Studio Connect To Server dialogue has a long lag of about 3 seconds per character typed
- Authentication fails, even though the password is entered correctly
Using SQL Authentication and using another SSMS that is installed in a different server we are able to connect to the instance.
Any Idea in what to do in this cases?

Is it possible to install SQL Server Service pack updates from RTM to SP3
Let me go through my environment, we have a production server in Cluster Active-Passive node and it is SQL Server 2012 RTM installed no SP applied till date.
1) Can we update SQL Server2012 RTM to SP3 without applying SP1 & SP2?
2) Do we need to apply SP on both active and passive nodes? or only active node is enough by making it passive?
3) can you please suggest me any blog or link for reference to update sp3 on clustered nodes of SQL server.
I look forward for an early answer,
Thanks to SQLperformance helping me all the times.

Upgrading SQL Server 2016 RC2 instance to RC3 after RC2 has expired?
I have a SQL Server RC2 instance that has expired. When I try to go into Windows Services and start the SQL Server instance it fails to start and an error log entry in the Windows Application event log indicates this is due to "trial expiration". I see RC3 was release late last month and I'd like to upgrade to RC3. I've downloaded the SQL Server 2016 RC3 ISO and made it through all the wizard questions only to have it give me the following error
"Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Release Candidate 3 (RC3) SetupThe following error has occured:
A network-releated or instance-specific error occured while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible...."
It appears an upgrade cant occur unless the SQL Server instance to be upgraded is running. In this case the SQL Server instance to be upgraded can not be started because the trial is marked as expired. What can I do? I have quite a bit of data in this database that needs to be preserved.
Thank you.
SQL Server 2005 service hung ... "Change Pending"
Have an interesting situation.
I have a NeverFail cluster on which I loaded SQL Server 2005 and SP1.
All was great. Both nodes had no issues with the initial setup or the SP1 update.
When I forced a failover to the inactive node, MOST of the services like SSIS, Full-Text and SQL Browser came up like a champ.
BUT ... the SQL Server service and the SQL Agent did not come up (or shall I say not fully).
I am now looking at the SQL Server Configuration Manager and I see the following for the SQL Server service:
"Name" shows the RED block icon for the SQL Server
"State" shows "Change pending ..."
"Start Mode" is set to Manual
"Log on as" has my domain account listed
"Process ID" has the number 2956 (so it has started somewhat).
I then click open the SQL Service item and it shows that it is stopped.
I am given the option to START the service. When I try to start it, the meter bar comes up and moves slowly to the end and then an error returns of ...
"The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely manner. Consult the event log or other applicable errors logs for details"
If I look under windows Services in the Admin Tools section... I see the services for SSIS, FT and Browser listed and started BUT I see SQL Server says its "starting".
If I click open the service from here, once again it show "starting" and all of the option buttons to Stop-Start-Pause-Resume are grayed out and I am not able to use them.
I have looked in the Windows Event Logs for any events but none are present.
Now I know why the SQL Agent is not running, and of course that is due to is dependency on SQL Server being up and running.
First off WHAT does the "Change pending" message mean?
Then what other logs can I look at for some help or is there someone who has the answers to this dilemma.
Thanks and have a great evening
SQL Server on Linux
I have Signed up for SQL sever on Linux evaluation.

But the link takes me to regular SQL server download page.
Was anyone able to successfully install SQL server on linux using the link provided in community newsletter?
